Operations of the orphanage

We take pride in the operations of the orphanage

We work tirelessly to to provide a safe and secure home for the children who live at the orphanage.  This is not an easy task but we do it with love and kindness providing the best home like setting possible for our children.

Operating 24 Hours a day - 7 days a week - 365 Days a year

We have five full time staff members working in the orphanage. Gopini – Managing director, Dev Praja- Teacher and activities manager, Sumi Tamang – cook, Nirmaya Chepang – Caregiver, and Kalpana Tamang – Caregiver.  All live on-site and are available for meeting  the children's needs. The full time staff spend 24 hours a day seven days week with children .  Staff members do occasionally leave the orphanage to celebrate festival days but other staff are always present.

Caregivers help children for their personal hygiene,  they clean the house, wash clothes and clean dishes. plates. Most importantly, they love and look after the children.

Food and Nutrition

There are two large meals each day; one at 9:00 am and  the second at 7:00 pm. The meals primarily consist of  rice, lentil and vegetable curry. Meat is also served once a week.

In addition, in the morning the children have tea and biscuits. School snacks are also provided for the children to eat at school.  Seasonal fruits or eggs are also provided in the late afternoon.

Health, Medical Care and Counseling

One of the responsibilities of our care givers is to provide medical and health services for our children. On site we have a primary health kit with supplies to handle emergencies. For fevers, flues and common colds,  we purchase medicine from a local pharmacy and dispense pills as required. If the illness is severe, we take the children to a hospital for treatment.

All of our children have unfortunately experienced some form of  trauma in their lives prior to coming to Hopeful Home. We are aware of this and make efforts to always talk with the children, to encourage them to share their  emotions and we listen to their stories. If there is  a serious issue, we take them to a local psychologist who helps them to deal with the issue.

Education

We believe in the importance of education.  All of our children attend school on a regular basis. We are also fortunate to have a teacher / activities manager as a member of our staff. Dev Praja helps the children do their homework and also accompanies them to school.

In 2023, we purchased two desktop computers for use by children. They are now learning how to type and play videos. They are also being taught how to use the internet.  In addition, they will be taught how to write emails with sponsors and  pen pals.

Social Interactions and Activities

We provide children with the opportunities to participate in a wide-range of  activities.  We  celebrate national holidays.  We also conduct field trips to places of interest such as temples , the theater, zoos, the countryside and area farms. Once a year we organize  an outing like a picnic or camping trip.  Sometimes volunteers / visitors organize these events.

Importantly, we provide daily opportunities for our children to engage with each other and for them to have a socially active and enriching childhood.

Children are allowed to leave the orphanage but we always keep our eyes on

them to assure their safety.  If the children have family members , we allow them to spend time with their relatives. They may leave the orphanage so long as the family member signs release documents.  Once they children are older and have completed their education, we try to reintegrate them into their families or relatives.

Facility Cleaning and Maintenance

We pay particular attention to assuring that our facility is clean and well maintained. Care givers along with the children clean the building. Older children wash their dishes and clothes.

With small maintenance repairs, Gopini or Dev handle repairs on the building. For more major repairs, we hire plumbers, carpenters /electricians and masons.

Items in need that would help our operations.

We are always in need of items that would assist us in our operations.  From the simple such as bedding and kitchen utensils to the more elaborate items such as a microwave oven or computers.
