It's impressive that such a small investment can go so far in Nepal and make a very significant difference in the lives of the children who reside at Hopeful Home and for its employees.
Expenses involved in operating Hopeful Home
Food and Nutrition
The largest expense involves the costs of food and nutrition for the 19 children residing at Hopeful Home and for the on-site staff. Food purchased throughout the year include rice and flower, vegetables, lentils, snacks, fruit, meat, eggs, tea and sugar, oil and spices, and cooking gas. These costs total approximately $8,000 representing almost a third of the annual budget.
Education
Education expenses largely consist of mandatory school fees, textbooks, school uniforms, and school supplies. The annual cost is approximately $5,800 representing about 22 percent of operating costs.
Staff Costs
Annual staffing costs are approximately $5,500 representing 20 % of operating costs. It is hard to believe but the funds pay for five full time staff members including the director, assistant director, cooks, care givers and an activities manager.
Shelter
Hopeful Home does not own its building at this time but rather pays for rent and building repairs Building related expenses include rent, a rental tax, utilities and maintenance. Annual costs are approximately $3,200 representing thirteen percent of total costs.
Health Care
Hopeful Home works hard to assure that children are healthy and receive medical care and counseling when needed. Costs have fortunately historically been low and are about $500 annually. Good hygiene is also promoted which has contributed to the health of the children and staff.
Other Expenses
Hopeful Home also encounters miscellaneous expenses. Typically they include the costs related to office administration, entertainment and clothes for the children. These expenses typically amount to less than ten percent of operating costs.
